I came back to the hobby during COVID. One thing I hated, and still hate doing is sanding putty.I am just not that good at it. I am always looking for something to help me. The UMM-USA series of sanding bars are one solution to a gritty problem.

The bars come in various sizes; fine, small, medium, large, extra-large and extra-extra-large. I reviewed the Extra-Large version. They come as a six-sided polished aluminum bar, with the ends being pointed.

My initial take on the block was one of curiosity, a large flat good for sanding large flat surfaces, or so I thought; something most aircraft and ship models do not have. I then took a closer look and realized that the angled/pointed ends would be great for small tight surfaces, or if a very narrow area needed to be sanded, which is how I have been using it. Ironically, my son printed a sandbag wall and used the long flat bottom to clean it up.

Using the block is straight forward. Cut a section of sandpaper, and fold it and hold it over the end of the block. Attaching the sand paper with tape is another option. You can use any grit of sand paper, or almost any companies sand paper; and quickly change grits.

I am working on a 1/72nd C-130 using aftermarket engines and nacelles. I wish I had this when sanding the seam between the engine and wing as the pointed end would have been perfect.

I was also finishing a F-16 model when I got this. I had purchased small wheel chocks for the display, and was not looking forward to sanding them down, and cleaning them up so I could attach them to the model as sanding sticks are too wide for what I needed.I used the sanding block to smooth the wheel chocks, and then sand a strip of paint off to give a clean area to apply glue in just a few minutes.

This block will go with my other sanding tools, and I see me using it a lot, especially if I have a 90-degree seam or other tight seams.I highly recommend getting some of these, and will buy other sizes as soon as I can.

Finally, I’d like to thank UMM-USA and IPMS for giving the sanding block to me for review.
