ICM has been releasing quality kits, figure sets, and recently paints to support their vast library of releases. Today, we see a set dedicated to WWI Armored Vehicles. These are water-based acrylic paints that can be brushed as is or airbrushed after thinning with either distilled water or ICM brand thinner. They come in screw top bottles that are wide-mouth and not dropper bottles, so I used my handy pipette to dole out smaller quantities for testing.

What’s Inside the Box

This set includes six 12mL plastic bottles featuring the following colors:

  • Buff (No. 1041)
  • Tan Earth (No. 1058)
  • Dark Sea Grey (No. 1034)
  • Gun Metal (No. 1027)
  • US Dark Green (No. 1072)
  • Off White (No. 1028)

I used the Tan Earth and US Dark Green for the interior and exterior of Monty’s Office Caravan, respectively, as I didn’t have a current WWI project. The opacity of these two shades was quite nice, with only one coat needed. The tan earth served as a nice shade for the wooden interior of the caravan.

I used my airbrush, and while I didn’t have any of the ICM thinner (maybe including a small bottle in the sets would be helpful for new painters?) I used a small amount of water to thin instead. I thinned about 50/50, and the coverage on the coat was splendid—no clogging in the airbrush and easy to clean up as well.

Conclusion

These paints work quite well for painting and spraying, whether you are modeling a WWI vehicle or WWII in my case. Whether hand brushing or airbrushing, I could find no faults with these paints. The opacity of most was excellent and will save paint in the end.

My sincere thanks to ICM and IPMS/USA for the review samples.
