ColorWorks Paints – Primer Black, Primer Grey, Varnish Matt
In researching the company and these products, I found that the Kaleido ColorWorks primers and matte varnish from Gaahleri, which entered the global hobby market around 2023, represent a modern and user-friendly approach to water-based modeling paints. As part of Gaahleri’s ecosystem—a coordinated line of products designed to work together for consistent results—they are formulated to complement the company’s airbrush systems and simplify the overall painting process. On their website, they offer paints, airbrushes, and a range of airbrush accessories and replacement components. Built around RapidAir Technology, which enhances atomization and leveling so acrylics spray more like lacquers, these products provide smooth application with reduced tip dry.
The black and grey primers offer solid coverage with good detail retention, while the matte varnish produces a uniform flat finish. Although not as durable as lacquer-based alternatives, they provide a low-odor, easy-to-use option well-suited for indoor modeling.
For this review, I received Kaleido Gloss Black Primer KP104, Kaleido Matt Primer Grey KP102, and Kaleido Matt Varnish KV103 all supplied in 60ml plastic squeeze bottles with flip-top caps.
Reviewer’s Comments
So, let us see whether these primers and varnishes perform as advertised on both plastic and resin surfaces. Since I needed to paint the resin base for a Pirate Captain figure I was working on, I applied a coat of Kaleido ColorWorks Gloss Black Primer KP104. The product guidelines state that these paints come pre-thinned for use with a 0.3 mm to 0.5 mm airbrush needle at 10 PSI or higher. They also note that multiple coats are unnecessary and that the surface should be dry to the touch within 15–20 minutes. Even with a single light coat, coverage was excellent. In fact, one light application fully covered the base, and the drying time matched the manufacturer’s claim exactly, as shown in Figure 1. Since this was an acrylic base primer, clean-up was a snap using my airbrush cleaning solution.
This was the color I wanted without airbrushing on a coat of gloss black paint.
While building an ICM kit, I used Kaleido Gloss Black Primer KP104. The primer sprayed exceptionally well, producing a smooth finish, and cleanup was quick and easy using my own homemade cleaner formula. The project was a 1918 Ford Model T that required a black finish, and Kaleido’s Gloss Black Primer proved to be an excellent match. Because the primer already provided the proper gloss black appearance, there was no need to apply an additional final color coat after priming.
Next, I applied Kaleido Matt Grey Primer KP102 to my 1:16 scale Jeep. As mentioned earlier, the primer only required thorough shaking before use. It sprayed on exceptionally well, producing excellent coverage, even over the brass details and attachments I had added to the vehicle.
Included in my review sample was a 60ml bottle of Kaleido Acrylic Matt Varnish KV103. Wanting to evaluate its performance, and not having a completed model available for testing, I used a piece of polystyrene sheet that had first been coated with Kaleido ColorWorks Gloss Black Primer. Once the primer had dried, I applied a coat of Matt Varnish KV103 to determine whether it would truly produce a flat finish. I was genuinely impressed with the results, as the varnish dried to an excellent matte appearance that I can easily see myself using on future projects. Overall, I could not have been more pleased with the varnish’s performance. In the photo the gloss or on the left with the matt varnish on the right.
Conclusion
- Kaleido ColorWorks offers an impressive range of primers that perform exactly as advertised.
- Although still a relatively new name in the hobby paint market, the company has made a strong impression with both its primers and varnish products.
- Kaleido ColorWorks paints from Gaahleri are now available through several U.S.-based retailers.
- The primers spray smoothly, provide excellent coverage, and require minimal preparation before use.
- The varnishes produce consistent finishes and perform exceptionally well on both plastic and resin surfaces.
- These products may quickly become a preferred alternative to many existing primer and varnish lines currently on the market.
- You will not be disappointed with the results.
Thanks to ColorWorks Paints and IPMS/USA for allowing me to review these products.
