24 Mecha Colors Paint Set
Gaahleri is a company that burst onto the North America scene first back in 2023 with a new line of airbrushes that quickly became very popular among modelers and artists. I received a Gaahleri Mobius this past Christmas, and it has quickly become my new go-to airbrush. When I found out they were releasing the new Kaleido Colorworks paint line, I had to jump on the chance to check them out.
What’s Inside the Box
The set I am reviewing here is the 24 Mecha Colors set and features vibrant colors, as well as bottles of thinner and cleaner. The box is a lift-off and inside everything is well protected with foam inserts. The paints are water-based acrylics and are factory pre-thinned for immediate use. According to their documentation, the paints are powered by RapidAir™ Technology, which addresses common water-based paint issues, such as beading, uneven coverage, and sagging, by applying in a smooth, sheet-like layer. The set includes the following colors:
- K101 Cool White
- K102 Bright Red
- K103 Bright Yellow
- K104 Bright Blue
- K105 Olive Green
- K106 Deep Olive Green
- K107 Hibiscus Purple
- K108 Titanium Slate
- K109 Phantom Gray
- K110 Forge Red
- K111 Rose Taupe
- K112 Chestnut Red
- K113 Azure Blue
- K114 Dark Azure
- K115 Space Blue
- K116 Dark Space Blue
- K117 Freedom Blue
- K118 Dessert Rose
- K119 Armor White
- K120 Armor Gray
- K121 Armor Carbon
- K122 Dark Coral
- K123 Sunset Orange
- K124 Artillery Green
- Airbrush Thinner
- Airbrush Cleaner
I immediately cracked open the box and was impressed with how they were packaged. The four rows of six paints were held in place by two larger sealed bottles of thinner and cleaner which were laid on their sides with another foam insert above them. I immediately dug out one of the Maschinen Krieger kits in my stash and got to spraying. I did treat the left pauldron with some Krylon white primer, and while Gaahleri states no primer is needed, the coverage of Bright Blue was definitely better with the primed side.
After masking, I then sprayed Bright Yellow onto both sides. The paint did not peel up when I took the masking tape off and the yellow had pretty good coverage. I then tried to apply stripes of Armor White and Deep Olive Green, but there was some bleed through on both despite the Tamiya tape. The opacity of all the paint was quite good — although the white could probably use another coat over the darker blue. Cleanup was an absolute breeze with their cleaner.
Conclusion
Like their airbrushes, these paints were an absolute dream to use. You get quite a palette of colors in the set, and they were almost ink-like in their consistency. I am really not sure why you would ever need to thin them down more unless you were maybe using an ultra-fine needle. There was practically no scent to the paints or their cleaner and thinner, and modelers or artists of any skill level should have no issues using them.
My sincere thanks to Gaahleri and IPMS/USA for the review samples
