Wingnut Wings has released two decal sheets that provide multiple marking options for their Pfalz D.IIIa kit. The decals, like others from Wingnut Wings, are packaged in zip-lock sleeves along with a comprehensive full color 4-page instruction booklet that includes application instructions, aircraft profiles, top and bottom wing plan views, historical information and a number of period photos of each of the aircraft covered by the decal sheets. These sets exhibit a high level of quality, on par with all of the products marketed by Wingnut Wings.

Set 30019 provides markings for six Pfalz D.IIIa fighters from numerous Jastas. Some of the subjects will require upper and under wing lozenge patterns (and rib tape) not included in this set, but is available from Wingnut Wings in sets they sell separately.

The markings are for:

  • Pfalz D.IIIa 1296/18 from the final production batch in Jasta 56 markings as it appeared in late 1918
  • Pfalz D.IIIa 8178/17 flown by Rudolf Stark, Royal Bavarian Jasta 34b in May 1918 (credited with 11 victories)
  • Pfalz D.IIIa 8284/17, flown by Jakob Pollinger, Royal Bavarian Jasta 77b in May 1918
  • Pfalz D.IIIa 8304/17 as it appeared in late 1918 with a shield design surrounding the fuselage balkenkreuz
  • Pfalz D.IIIa from Jasta 37 as it appeared in late 1918
  • Pfalz D.IIIa from the Marine Feld Jasta, displaying a well-weathered look in Mid-late 1918

Set 30020 provides markings for five more colorful Pfalz D.IIIa fighters. And, as in set 30019, some of them also require upper and under wing lozenge patterns (and rib tape) that Wingnut Wings sells separately (see other product reviews on this site for more information).

The markings are for:

  • Pfalz D.IIIa 5895/17 flown by Franz Hailer, Jasta 29 in late 1917- early 1918
  • Pfalz D.IIIa 8170/17 flown by Hans Böhning, Royal Bavarian Jasta 79b in June 1918 (credited with 17 victories)
  • Pfalz D.IIIa (serial number unknown) flown by Rudolf Berthold, JG II in June 1918 (credited with 44 victories)
  • Pfalz D.IIIa (from early production batch - serial number unknown) flown by Carl Degelow, Jasta 7 in March 1918 (credited with 30 victories)
  • Pfalz D.IIIa (serial number unknown) flown by Werner Hertel, Jasta 40s in July (?) 1918

The decals in these sets are produced for Wingnut Wings by Cartograf. They are accurately registered and printed in vibrant opaque colors on thin film (with minimal carrier film surrounding the printed images). The photos below show the decals provided on the sheets in these sets. All major aircraft markings, cockpit instrument faces, various data plates, propeller emblems and miscellaneous fuselage marking are included. Experience has shown Cartograf decals respond well to most mild decal setting solutions (that are applied in moderation and blotted carefully with a soft cloth or Q-tip). However, take note in the instruction booklets that Wingnut Wings recommends using a hair dryer to get the decals to conform to the surface rather than using a setting solution. I have not tried that trick yet, but it must work.

I recommend these decal sets to anyone who has 1/32 Wingnut Wings or Roden Pfalz D.IIIa kits and wants to finish them in some striking and unique markings not previously available in this scale.

My thanks to Wingnut Wings and IPMS/USA for the opportunity to review these new decal sets.
