Andy Singelton has several books out on painting figures and war gaming pieces and this book is the newest. You might recognize him from his studio - Volley Fire Painting Service. He has worked with manufacturers of war game equipment and scenarios and is the co-host of “A Few Brits and the Hobby”.

This book covers exactly as the title says, the latter half of WWII in Military vehicles. The chapters included are:

  1. Getting Started
  2. British Vehicles
  3. United States Vehicles
  4. Russian Vehicles
  5. German Vehicles
  6. Transfers
  7. Stowage
  8. Weathering
  9. Foliage and Camouflage
  10. Winter Camouflage

Getting started is just that and covers a discussion of the type of kits - resin, plastic or metal. Tools are discussed, including knives, files, side cutters and more. A full discussion of fillers and glues is then followed by a large discussion on paints. This leads into a discussion on paint brushes and techniques such as weathering, washes, dry brushing and more.

Chapters 2 through five have basically the same format. Each covers the history and background on colors. Insignia and tactical markings is covered. Painting is covered both with brush and airbrush and has references to specific paints from AK or Vallejo and even some Citadel paints. Multiple highlights, washes and pin washes and painting stowage. The end of each chapter shows some wonderfully painted vehicles and I have included pictures of some of the finished models. Specifics are called out as needed. For example, Zimmerit is called out on the German vehicles and specific masking methods for camouflage methods.

The remaining chapters detail specific of transfers, stowage and weathering. The transfer chapter details adding decals to the models while the stowage shows multiple options like tarps and ammo cans with specific color call outs and details. Weathering is just that - adding dirt, grime and oil leaks. All are covered with recommendations for brushes, paints and other weathering details to add depth to the model.

The last two chapters deal with adding foliage to a base or the actual kit and includes different types of trees. Lastly, its winter camouflage and covers methods for brush painting, sponge painting and chipping toad realism.

Woe, this book is great and the photos are superb. It may be described for war gaming but the methods and descriptions are good for armor of all sizes and definitely applicable to all types of modeling. Definitely recommended.

My thanks to Casemate and Pen & Sword for the chance to review this great book.
