P-38L Lightning Instrument Panel
Yahu Models has provided the IPMS reviewer corps with a 1/48th scale P-38L Lightning instrument panel. The base kit for this upgrade is designated for the Tamiya P-38J Lightning kit (61123). Referencing warbirdsresourcegroup.org, the “L” variant was an improved “J” variant with new engines and new rocket pylons. Thus, no differences in the airframe external shape. Of the P-38L-LO variant, 3,810 were built.
In the Package
The instrument panel (IP) detail set is enclosed in a plastic bag with one (1) photoetched (PE) IP already assembled, one (1) clear acetate sheet with printed detail, two (2) PE etched sheets for other cockpit panels. My sample review was missing the PE sheet that would have added detail to part M24. I did note in the pictures which part was missing.
Review Process
I have a Tamiya P-38J Lightning in my stash and took out the sprue with the IP parts to compare Yahu’s. Tamiya’s kit uses molded raised surface detail along with a decal to add dials to the IP.
Looking at the kit instructions, Yahu’s IP will be installed in Step 1 on part L7. You will need to sand away the raised details and some thickness. This will also include sanding away raised detail for part M24. In Steps 2 & 3, parts M8 & M6, respectively, will need some surface detail to be sanded off to add PE detail.
Conclusions
Overall, this is a nice detail set to convert Tamiya’s P-38J instrument panel to an “L” variant. Just wish the other missing PE sheet was included to review a complete set.
General note to buyers; Make sure to inspect your set for completeness when purchasing if you can buy in person.
This is a recommended detail set for all builders who want to convert your Tamiya P-38J Lightning to a P-38L variant.
I want to thank Yahu Models for providing the P-38L instrument panel set and IPMS/USA for allowing me the opportunity to review.
