The Modern British Army, Volume 2
This is volume 2 of this series, Vol. 1 of which focused on the process of how the current Royal Army has evolved since WW II. The subject of this volume is the current and possible future structure and equipment of this army.
The first 40 pages list the various regiments/units of the Royal Army, their function and organization. Usually with such lists, you get the ‘fighting’ units and maybe a few engineer types, but this list gives you everything, armored, infantry, artillery, engineers, anti-aircraft, logistics, medical, intelligence, the whole lot. The next section focuses on the equipment used by all these units and is illustrated with color profiles of vehicles and photos of small arms. He also describes the organization and intended function of each type of regiment, briefly going into any developments on the near horizon as to weapons or organization. Next is a section that describes the uniforms and distinctive flashes and badges of each type of unit. There are four appendicies. The first briefly lists the Royal Army garrisons and those overseas. The second is a listing of all the honors and decorations that can be awarded. The third list the possible campaign medals and the fourth is a possible future order of battle for the army.
The book physically is very nice, being made of sturdy glossy paper stock. This allows the photos and color profiles to be crystal clear. The information is provided in a clear, concise manner that covers all aspects of the subject. Although this is only an 84-page book, there is a lot of information in here and the photos are very good. If anyone is interested in the current British armed forces, this is a book to have. Good information presented well in a nice format and at a reasonable price.
