Modelling Battle of Britain Fighter Aircraft
Go to any model show and you are likely to see numerous models of aircraft that took part in the Battle of Britain, from both sides. This new book from Pen and Sword offers step-by-step instructions for creating models of Battle of Britain fighters, complete with photos, historical notes and construction and painting tips and tricks for the beginner or intermediate modeller.
Eight builds are featured, all Airfix kits, which is understandable given the origin of the book; the ready availability of those kits in Britain; and the relative simplicity of the kits for the nascent modeller for whom this book is aimed. There are two builds each for the Spitfire, B-P Defiant, Bf109 and Bf110, with the first three in both 1/72 and 1/48, and the latter in 1/72 only (because Airfix doesn’t do a 1/48 Bf110). Each stage of construction for each is illustrated and fully captioned, detailing the tools and materials needed complete the models through to completion with painting and decaling highlighted. The author explains each technique in detail, giving the beginner tips on how to accomplish them, and resulting in a competently-made model.
Written by well-known wargames author and podcaster, Andy Singleton, the author packs in a lot of hints and tips to help the modeller get the most out of the chosen kits, including ideas on how to display the completed models, with tips on painting figures for example.
Aside from the modelling aspects, the book – written in conjunction with the Kent Battle of Britain Museum - also features many period photos and historical notes on the Battle and the aircraft that took part, making this more than just a ‘how-to’ modelling book, but a useful little reference for the less advanced or younger modeller.
Recommended for beginners and younger modellers everywhere. My thanks to Casemate for the review sample.
