In 60-plus years of modeling I’ve never had a “modeling stand” except what I’ve hand made or jury-rigged, Rube Goldberg style. This is the first “store bought” rig that I’ve owned, and I’m glad I waited until now.

War Dog Modeling’s Model Airplane Stand is simplicity itself. It comes broken down, but takes only a couple of minutes to assemble into a ready-to-use structure. Each piece fits snugly into its adjacent part, with runner guides and placement pegs to keep each piece securely in place, no matter how they’re positioned. Once together, the sturdy metal bolts and hard plastic base, arms and wing nuts allow for a wide variety of positionable combinations. However, the key to the success of this stand is the use of numerous rubber washers on the support arms that are placed to provide a sure grip, with a minimal number of contact points, that help to keep the model from moving or sliding off of the stand, even when the support arms are positioned to hold the model at something other that flat and level attitude.

With 1/48th scale models as a reference, the basic stand will hold the smallest aircraft model, and the arms can be extended to accommodate fairly large models. It securely holds my under-construction F-14 Tomcat with ease. A quick switch to the 1/32 upgrade arms allows it to hold the largest aircraft model in my collection, a quarter scale B-29. The larger extension arms even have rubber washer “feet” (like the base itself) for added stability when fully extended. The stand is fully capable of holding just about any size aircraft model available.

This is an aircraft stand designed with modeler input, providing the kind of capability that models have asked for. Its simple and efficient, and would be an asset on any modeling workbench. Highly recommended.

Thanks to War Dog Modeling and the IPMS Reviewer Corps for proving this review sample.
