Shortly after it released its Royal Class 1/72 MiG-15 set, which included a MiG-15 UTI trainer as one of the 4 kits, Eduard released parts of the MiG-15 as overtrees.

One of the first items released was the photo-etch set for the MiG-15 UTI. As this is an overtree set, it did not come with instructions, however, as Eduard’s webpage for the MiG-15 Royal Class kit includes a link to the kit’s instructions, all you have to do is download the portion of the instructions that relate to the MiG-15 UTI and you are all set to go.

The set provides photo-etch parts to completely overhaul both the front and back cockpits of Eduard’s MiG-15 UTI kit with replacements for both instrument panels and details for the side consoles and cockpit sidewalls. To install the front instrument panel parts, the instructions direct you to sand off all of the molded on details before attaching the phot-etch panel parts. I recommend going a bit further and that you also sand down the kit panel to make it thinner to compensate for the thickness of the photo-etch parts as I found when I went to assemble everything together that the since the new panel was thicker than the original panel, I had a hard time getting it to fit where it was supposed to.

There are a number of parts for each of the side consoles and care needs to be taken getting the new parts aligned properly on the kit consoles because if they are too far forward, they will interfere with the fit of the instrument panels and the fit of the cockpit floor to the side panels.

One nice touch was the inclusion of the semicircular straps over the foot pedals in each cockpit, however, I never did quite get mine bent into a semi-circle, instead mine look like a cross between an old pup-tent and a squished beach ball. I also think the straps might be a little too big for a 1/72 scale boot, but they do look cool when installed.

The set includes photo-etch seat belts for both front and rear seats and these do add a lot to the finished seats and help make the cockpit look appropriately busy.

Finally the set includes what appear to be tie downs or something similar for the main landing gear legs. Care must be taken when installing them as they are very tiny and prone to launching themselves into the great unknown. They are also almost invisible to see once installed.

This is a great detail set for Eduard’s MiG-15 UTI trainer, and was easy to work with once I located the instructions, as a kit to install it in!

Recommended. Thank you to Eduard for the review sample and to IPMS-USA for letting me review it.
