Many thanks to Mr. Ross MacMillan of Scale Aircraft Conversions and the IPMS Reviewer Corps for allowing me to try this neat substitute and replacement set for the Kitty Hawk UH-1D. I am pleased to report on another sweet add-on and upgrade from this company. The target kit has excellent detail and complexity, with a bit of a tendency to be a tail sitter. The addition of heavier metal skid parts eliminates the tendency of the model to “sit back”.

The 6 white-metal parts arrived in a blister pack, backed by the distinctive SAC company logo. The weight of the parts is very noticeable. Some parts are on sprues and all are easily cleaned up for painting. The parts require very little buffing, cleanup and polishing. Some barely-noticeable seams readily retreat at the advance of a #11 blade! My incautious elbow on the bench slightly bent and twisted the parts in the package. See the package image for the scene of the accident.

The SAC gear parts directly replace the equivalent Huey kit parts. The steps on the forward skid tips fit nicely. I think they are steps or at least that is what I remember from a real Huey before I regularly plunged into the Alaskan muskeg many years ago. The skid and leg arches required a little bit of “truing” or straightening. The leg arches fit very securely into the fuselage bottom. Gluing up and aligning the parts was easily done before final assembly. An excellent feature is the ability to tweak and bend the skids ever so slightly to ensure the model sits evenly.

Other than polishing, tweaking alignments and fixing my mistakes, the parts are ready to drop in and fit very well with the kit. I believe it is very possible to retrofit a completed UH-1D with these SAC parts if you should choose to do so. I highly recommend this add-on to enhance an excellent base kit.

Again, my sincerest gratitude to both Mr. Ross MacMillan of Scale Aircraft Conversions and the IPMS Reviewer Corps for providing me this conversion set for review. It is a great privilege, thank you!
