For us, geriatric modelers fixed on detailing some of the venerable kits of our youth, Scale Aircraft Conversions can be exceedingly useful in a number of circumstances. For many, this may be as simple as replacing fragile styrene components with sturdier metal items. In other cases, some extra features are added.

The set for the Hawker Typhoon Mk. 1b of classic Revell fame is a good example. This pack features both main landing gear legs as well as the tailwheel fork, replacement radio mast, and a nice set of 20mm Hispano-Suiza cannons without the early shrouds. In terms of modifications, the two-part tail wheel fork has been rendered into a single piece, and the shroudless cannons are a very nice alternative to the kit items. I’d been thinking of attempting this modest conversion myself anyway, but these eliminated the need for scratch-building.

On close examination of the pack’s elements, I discovered that the main landing gear were direct copies of the kit parts rendered in metal. Although this does strengthen this area somewhat, I would have liked to have seen some attempt to add a little extra detail along the way – brake lines, bolts, etc. Still, these replacement items are relatively easy to add.

As stated before, the tail wheel fork is rendered as a single piece, which definitely strengthens this rather fragile area, and it’s easy to bend it out enough to insert the kit wheel. I was quite satisfied with this item.

Although I didn’t need it for the variant I’m working on, the set does include an aerial, which is definitely sturdier than the plastic original. It really does strengthen this particular item, which is otherwise rather easy to snap off when rigging.

All told, this is a useful set if you’re working with this classic kit as I am. I am especially pleased with the cannon replacements, but the whole set is quite handy for rendering your build stronger and less prone to shedding parts. Very well recommended.

I thank Scale Aircraft Conversions for helping with my challenging build, and to IPMS/USA for a chance to add these to my project. Happy modeling, everyone!
