The metal gear company strikes again! Thanks to Ross at SAC for sending us another of your expansive line of metal landing gear, and thanks also to IPMS USA leadership for sending it to me.

This is becoming a theme; a SAC upgrade to the basic kit plastic! The set consists of 5 parts: Two main struts and side braces, two main strut drag braces, and a one-piece tail wheel fork.

The FLY models Hurricane is a magnificent bit of modeling fun. It is limited issue, short run-design, with resin, plastic that (for the most part) fits with precision (no alignment pins), only needing a bit of practiced hand to construct. I had a few areas requiring putty, but really must rave about one part: the main gear wheel well. This is a fantastic bit of resin, and once prepared and painted, makes a great foundation for the SAC main gear.

The tail wheel fork is worth the price of admission; this is a typical weak-link on large models, and the SAC gear replaces the kit’s two-part tail wheel fork. This is 1) stronger and (2) easier to install. Just open the hole in the fuselage, superglue the tail gear in place, and you are done.

The mains are direct replacement for the kit item. Take your time lining these up because the Hurricane has a distinct “sit” when on the main gear. Again, I had these installed on the model in about five minutes. Of course, it took me two weeks to get to this point on the kit, but that’s another story.

Again, I believe the SAC gear is mandatory for many kits like this, in particular the strength factor over time, as the resin add-ons increase the stress on plastic gear. Metal takes the strain, as noted on the tail gear! An easy 10 rating again, thanks Ross and SAC for filling this modeling niche and IPMS USA for the forum to review such items.
