The GBU-10 Paveway I is one of the United States first precision guided weapons put into service. The GBU-10 is actually the combination of a standard Mk. 84 2,000lb bomb with the Paveway I guidance system. Developed in the late 60’s and early 70’s it was used extensively in Vietnam. While the MK. 84 bomb is still around, the Paveway I guidance package has been replaced by improved versions offering more guidance options and better range.

Eduard’s Brassin series is known for its interesting subjects and exquisitely detailed castings and this set is no exception. The set consists of 14 pieces, two bomb bodies with rear fins, 2 sets of guidance canards, two seeker heads and two seeker heads with covers and a rather extensive little decal sheet. After washing the resin off to remove any mold release agent, it is a relatively simple process to remove the bomb bodies and the canards from the casting blocks. Be sure to trim all of the flash off and clean up the attachment points on the canards, or they will not seat properly. A nice feature is that the attachment points for the canards are keyed so they slot into exactly the right spot on the front guidance unit to avoid forward and aft alignment issues. You will need to align them vertically so they are in line with the tail fins, so be sure your super glue allows you a little working time to verify this alignment. If you did not clean up the casting block attachment point enough, it will be very obvious as the canards will not fully seat against the guidance unit.

As the seeker heads are extremely tiny pieces, I elected not to remove them from their casting block until everything was painted and decaled. Often the weapons have plastic nose covers on them until right before the mission, so Eduard actually provides a second set of seeker heads cast with the covers installed. Check your references if you decide to use the covered seeker heads as the covers do vary in color.

Painting is a snap as the entire weapon (other than the covers) is Olive Drab. After a quick coating of future, both weapons are reading for decaling. The decal sheet while small includes 20 decals for each weapon, and the decals really do add a lot to the weapons.

I have not yet decided what I want to mount these on, but when I do, I will need to cut a small slot in the pylon to do so and Eduard has cast the 2 mounting lugs on each weapon.

This is a very nice set and has much finer detail on each weapon than found on most kit versions, including those in Hasegawa’s weapons sets and will add nice detail to the kit of your choosing.
