Acrylic Paint Set for WWII US Navy Vehicles
ICM continues to be prolific with both kits and paint sets. The Acrylic Paint Set for WWII US Navy Vehicles is no exception and consists of six 12ml paint bottles, that are surprisingly not dropper top style, but rather are wide mouthed. The colors include:
- Natural Steel (No. 1025)
- Blue Grey (No. 1032)
- Rubber Black (No. 1039)
- Deck Tan (No. 1055)
- Camouflage Green (No. 1071)
- Varnish Satin (No. 2002)
Painting instructions are on the side of the packaging, stating
- Shake well before use
- Paint is prepared for a brush, for the airbrush dilute with water or thinner, 40-60%
- Use primer when painting with airbrush
- Colors can be mixed with each other
- If the ambient temperature is above 25oC, use retarder
- When applying from airbrush, first use primer
The packaging includes a picture of what I believe to be a WWII US Navy WC52 truck on a PSP (Pierced Steel Planking) mat on a sandy beach with jungle in the background. All five colors are represented in the color call out of the same truck on the back. The colors make sense and look good, and the inclusion of a satin varnish is a nice touch.
I used spoons for the paint samples. The spoons were all given a primer of gray, followed by the top of the spoon being airbrushed, then the bottom brush painted by hand, with the line delineated by masking tape. Airbrushing was a challenge to get the consistency correctly, especially for the lighter colors. Brush painting was remarkably easy, but a little patchier. Both dried quickly and have a flat matte appearance. I was impressed that some of the colors were hard to differentiate between airbrush and hand brush. The Natural Steel and Rubber Black paints are amazing. The satin varnish was applied to the camouflage green (airbrushed for both color and varnish on the top; hand painted with both on the bottom); photo included with wet brush painted varnish.
I tested the Blue Grey on a Vindicator ready for paint and like the color, especially after it darkened a little with dull coat. The Camouflage Green color came in handy for an ICM Wehrmacht-captured P.204 (utilizing the same ICM color number). My only complaint is that dropper style bottles are readily accessible and control paint distribution much better than this open-topped style.
This is a good, one-stop acrylic paint set for US Navy equipment in World War II. This is good paint for figures as brush marks disappear (although larger vehicles will require good brush painting skills), the paints are sturdy and dry matte.

Profuse thanks to ICM and IPMS/USA for providing the review sample.
