Panel Line Accent Color

Published:
Company: Tamiya

Tamiya has released a “Panel Line Accent” line with 4 colors: Black, Brown, Gray and Dark Brown. They are an enamel-based wash, so it is smelly and it could attack bare plastic, so test it on a scrap piece (a runner or extra part) first.

The panel line accent is packaged in the same kind of bottle than the Tamiya Glue down to the small and thin applicator brush, which comes in very handy when applying it to a recessed panel line.

In this review I applied 3 “spots” of panel accent line to an unpainted piece (leftover) from and Eduard model and it did not damage that plastic. Not only that, but 3 applications were enough to see all the panel lines completely covered. The wash just flows on its own along the whole panel line.

Then I decided to try this product on a… more

Axis Aircraft in Latin America

Published:
Book Author(s): Amaru Tincopa and Santiago Rivas
Company: Specialty Press

During the 1920 and 1930’s most Latin American countries started developing air routes and air services; at the same time that their own armed forces started developing their air arms. That fledgling market brought intense competition from industrial countries, including Germany and Italy, which landed significant contracts for both military and civilian aircraft.

This book is organized into 16 chapters, basically one chapter per country, plus a handful of special chapters like “Visitors” (i.e aircraft not operated by Latin American countries but that made special visits to Latin America), Axis Airline Services, Survivors, etc. In this section is where the only Japanese aircraft in Latin America is found.

Most of the airframes in service were either German or Italian,… more

Mc 202 Exhaust Stack

Published:
Company: Eduard

Eduard Models continues to expand its Brassin line, this time with a drop-in replacement for the Hasegawa Mc 202 (also applicable to the Eduard Folgore #1132).

The parts are casted in grey resin, with no bubbles or surface imperfections. Please note that the parts are handed (i.e., they are left and right parts).

The exhaust ends are hollow (big improvement over the plastic part) and the sides of the exhaust are very thin, much closer to scale. The parts also include a beautiful weld seam.

You can see from the pictures that the resin parts certainly improve the look of the model and because they are a drop-in replacement it takes no extra time to install them. They fit perfectly!

Highly recommended.

I would like to thank Eduard Models and IPMS/… more

Super Etendard Seatbelts - STEEL

Published:
Company: Eduard

Eduard continues to expand its series pre-painted seatbelts in the “steel” series. I think that Eduard Models call this product line “Steelbelts”.

When working with this new line of seatbelts (steelbelts) the main thing that jumps is how thin they are. Reading in the Info Eduard (June 2016 issue) they say they are 0.04 mm thick. I should probably say they are 0.04 mm thin. They are pre-painted and also have some shading (weathering) on them.

You apply them like any other metal aftermarket piece, using a dab of superglue. That is all that takes to use the steel seatbelts. About 1 minute per seat and it is very easy to do (if you have experience with small parts).

Pros

  • They are very flexible and easy to pose in any position… more

Vanished Hero

Published:
Book Author(s): Jay A. Stout
Company: Casemate Publishers

This book covers the military service history of Elwyn Righetti, a fighter ace and the higher strafing fighter ace from the Eight Air Force with 27 victories. In addition to that he destroyed over 600 enemy locomotives, including over 170 in just a period of 2 days!

Righetti was fascinated with aviation since an early age and learned to fly when he was young. He was a naturally gifted pilot and as such he was made an instructor after qualifying as a pilot with the USAAF. He spent most of the war in the States, training cadre after cadre of pilots. He arrived to the European Front in late 1944 and was put in charge of the 55th Fighter Group.

His aggressive commanding style made of him and his group an outstanding outfit. Although he was not always liked by other pilots… more

Bf-109G-6 (Early)

Published:
Company: Eduard

Eduard has released a new mold (with the correct wingspan) of the 1/48 Bf-109G-6 (early). In the Profipack package you get 5 sprues (including a clear one), a color photo-etch fret, two decal sheets for 5 markings (all Luftwaffe) and a mask set for the canopy and the tail wheel. No flash anywhere and very sharp, recessed panel lines are a signature of those sprues.

Whlie you get 5 sprues, you also get plenty of unused (spare) parts, like 3 different propellers (only 1 is appropriated for this G-6), different wheels, some weapons, different rudders, air intakes, oil coolers and even extra canopies, so you should be able to get some “extras” for other 109s in your collection.

As expected, construction starts with the cockpit and it is a very straightforward and well-… more

Mosquito Exhausts - 5 Tube Exhaust Plus Siamese Connection

Published:
Company: RESIN2 Detail

I will be honest, I have not heard of Resin2Detail until about two months ago. I think they are about 1-yr old company and certainly they specialize in aftermarket details for aircraft (32nd, 48th and 72nd) , but visiting their website I’ve found at least one armor item.

This particular item gives you 4 exhausts of the 5-tube plus Siamese connection for the Mosquito engine. Being an airplane made of wood, the 6th tube needed to be moved away from the engine side and it was connected with the 5th tube.

All parts are perfectly casted without any imperfection, bubbles or partially molded parts.

As you can see in the pictures, the exhaust tubes are hollow; they have a lip and also have a more oblong and “flatter… more

We March Against England - Operation Sea Lion 1940-41

Published:
Book Author(s): Robert Forczyk
Company: Osprey Publishing

Osprey Publishing is well known for its softbound, mid-length book (80 to 100 pages) covering a specific topic. This book stands on its own category, with over 300 pages and hardbound. It speaks quality all around, down to its dust cover.

And the quality does not stop at the book binding, this is a carefully and thoughtfully researched book on a military operation that never was: Sea Lion, the invasion of Great Britain.

While the Battle of Britain has been covered in multiple books and encyclopedias, the number of books on the Operation Sea Lion is limited, in comparison. If you only want to read one book on this topic this is the one.

This book covers the strategic situation in May of 1940, how the Wehrmacht attempted to improvise an invasion force, the needed… more
