THANK YOU to our friends and suppliers at Aires/Quickboost (“QB”) for this excellent improvement set for the Academy F-4C/D! And thanks also to the reviewer corps leaders for making them available to me to review….

This set takes the kit components and improves them in the usual “Quickboost” manner … in this set, we are presented with all undercarriage doors to improve the Academy F-4C/D. Included in this 10-part set are all the doors for an F-4C/D, including the main gear doors, the main wheel follow-up doors, the main gear follow-up doors, two different Nose gear forward doors with two clear light lens covers, and the nose gear sideways-opening door. As usual with Quickboost, these items are more refined and defined than the kit bits. Check the side-by-side photos for comparison.

THANK YOU to our friends and suppliers at Aires/Quickboost for this excellent improvement set for the new Revell 1/48 tornado! And thanks also to the reviewer corps leaders for making the set available to me to review….

This six-part resin upgrade replaces the kit air data probes, the pitot tubes, and the Comm blade antennas. Once again Aires does the hard part; Basically you remove the parts from the pour stub with a sharp blade, clean up, and install them in place of the kit items. Be careful, because they are HYPER fragile and prone to destruction. That makes the scale fidelity worthwhile, but if you play sky-pilot with your models, well…expect them to disappear or just break off. Forewarned!

The pictures tell the story. I did not get the blade antenna seated well enough, so that’s a re-do for later.

This set is highly recommended for improved detail;. Thanks again to Quickboost and IPMS USA for providing these items…

I love figures, and as a fan of aircraft models, I naturally like figures to go with my aircraft. Figures help provide scale and a “human factor” to any build.

Aires is working hard to provide a range of figures for aircraft modelers, and the Soviet Pilot with life jacket is a good example. Looking over the raw figure, it includes a torso with relatively simple outfit, two arms, two different heads with different helmets, and a very nice oxygen mask with attached hose.

Russian aerial rockets have a fascinating history, and this little creature is very much a part of that history. Design work on this range of weapons began in the 1930s, and they were first deployed operationally during the Battle of Khalkhin Gol, part of the early war animosity between the Soviet Union and the expanding Japanese empire. During this engagement, RS-82 rockets were fired against Japanese aircraft from I-16 fighters, bringing down 16 fighters and 3 bombers – certainly one of the earliest instances of successful air-to-air missile attacks. Later, these same weapons were used in Air-to-ground attacks against hardened targets, such as armor. Investigating further, I’ve found pictorial instances of these being mounted on the I-16 Polikarpov, the Il-2 Sturmovik, as well as Lend-Lease aircraft such as the P-40 Warhawk and Hawker Hurricane. In fact, these little stingers were mounted on virtually every Russian aircraft used during the Great Patriotic War.

My, but I do love a good Stuka. I’ve been playing with 1/32nd scale Stukas ever since Revell first released their kit back in the 1970’s. I’ve built theirs dozens of times, then the 21st Century version, and now finally Trumpeter’s kits, which have filled in important gaps in the history of this fascinating aircraft.

One slight problem with the Trumpeter kit, however is the exhausts, which are molded as a solid piece. The exhaust outlets are tiny indeed, and having frustrated myself with trying to ream these out with miniature drill bits, I must admit I was quite pleased to receive the Quickboost replacement parts.

As simple, drop-in resin replacements, these really can’t be beat. They feature the relatively miniscule exhausts and are beautifully molded with excellent resolution and no molding flaws which I could detect. No modifications to the kit parts need to be made – just slap them in place when you’re ready for them.

Aerobonus has provided a great figure accessory for the Airfix Bedford MWD, although I think it could be used with other 1/48 RAF vehicles.

The detail quality is extremely high; there was no flash or other imperfection. The parts once removed from the mold base are ready to assembly.

The Assembly is quick and easy. They will look great as an addition to the Airfix Bedford MWD.

Thanks go to Aires for providing this kit to review and IPMS USA for allowing me to review it for them

The TS-11 Iskra (“Spark”) is a single engine two-seat primary jet trainer designed and constructed in Poland for the Polish Air Force. It was also used by the Indian Air Force. As the aircraft was not used by many countries, it was mostly overlooked by model manufacturers until recently. I am aware of two kits in 1/72 scale, the recent Arma Models kit and an older kit by Master Craft models. I picked up the Master Craft kit last spring at a model show as I like odd looking aircraft, so of course shortly thereafter Arma released its new kit of the Iskra. As I have not yet acquired the Arma kit, the comparison photos are to the Master Craft kit.

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engine heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). The B-17 was primarily employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the daylight strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force, based at many airfields in central and southern England, and the Fifteenth Air Force, based in Italy, complemented the RAF Bomber Command's nighttime area bombing in the Combined Bomber Offensive to help secure air superiority over the cities, factories and battlefields of Western Europe in preparation for the invasion of France in 1944. The B-17 also participated to a lesser extent in the War in the Pacific, early in World War II, where it conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields.

Tony Buttler was born in 1956 and joined High Duty Alloys in Redditch in 1974 as a metallurgist. For nearly 20 years he was closely involved in the testing of aluminum and titanium airframe and engine components for many of the world’s most important airplanes. It was during this timeframe that his interest in military aircraft grew into a passion. Since 1995, Tony has been a freelance aviation historian, with this book being his twenty-sixth major release. He has also written many titles for the Warpaint series of monographs as well as many articles for most of the popular historical aviation magazines.

The cover painting by Daniel Uhr depicts the Miles M.52 in flight ahead of its chase plane, a Gloster Meteor. This painting is reproduced again after the title page, pristine, without all the titles. I counted 112 black and white photographs, 18 color pictures, 20 tables, and 16 tables on 160 glossy pages.

THANK YOU to our friends and suppliers at Aires/Quickboost for another improvement set, in this case for the Revell DE Tornado IDS/GR-4 undercarriage doors. And thanks also to the reviewer corps leaders for making them available to me to review.

This set improves the kit components by replacing them with fine, pressure-molded resin parts. These are very thin and fragile. Included are five doors in gray resin, (two main, three nose gear) and two clear taxi lights.

Remove the parts from their pour stub, and superglue in place. These fit in place of the kit items, no additional sanding or kit plastic removal required. Quick and improved kit appearance with scale size and thickness.

The kit parts are good; the Aires parts are better. Improved, more “scale” detail, more finesse on the doors (and no mold seam to deal with), and “sharper” molding on the parts overall.
