Cover

The July/August 2013 edition of Windsock Worldwide is the fourth issue of Volume 29, and the multiple images on the colorful cover foretell three of the features in this issue. A photo of a pilot astride an Albatros D.Va suggest this issue’s ongoing coverage of 1/32 scale WWI figures. A close-up photo of a bare bones Camel promotes a preview of the new 1/16 scale Hasegawa kit, and a colorful SE5a/E side profile is a sample of one of this issues’ main features. Also of note is the cover masthead declaration that this edition begins the recognition of next year’s World War One Centenary. It all sets the stage for another excellent edition of Windsock Worldwide.

Before getting to the main features, this issue begins with a wealth of relevant news and other reports for scale model builders. The first regular column; the READER’S GALLERY, presents photo coverage of four highly detailed large scale models in 1/32 scale, 1/6 scale, and 1/5 scale. Following a brief FRONTLINE NEWS column (complete with a humorous captioned period photo), LOGBOOK ENTRIES reviews four recent WWI publications. Lance Krieg then continues his ongoing WWI Modeling Master Class with Chapter Nine (Part 2) that presents six and a half pages devoted to finishing WWI models (illustrated with 48 photos) that includes valuable information about simulating plywood.

Then, RARA AVIS describes the SE4a biplanes with photos and 1/48 and 1/72 scale drawings of both the curved-sided and flat-sided versions of this experimental fighter design.

Following that is a feature with period photos and a colorful seven-aircraft centerspread devoted to coverage of American SE5a and SE5E fighters. Some of the exotic paint schemes presented are almost too hard to believe…but they are authentic (see the centerspread in one of the photos below). Then, TRANSFER LIST reviews new ranges of Lozenge decals from three companies that will greatly enhance 1/32 scale models.
The new Hasegawa 1/16 scale uncovered Sopwith Camel is then previewed with text and a number of excellent photos. Follow that, KITBAG reviews new kits in multiple scales and some recently released 1/32 scale accessories. Then the new FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING column reviews the various 1/32 scale WWI figures that have been announced since the last issue of Windsock Worldwide was published.

As always, there are a good many product and retailer advertisements and some useful information thrown in as sidebars throughout the issue.

This edition (like all previous editions) is highly recommended to anyone interested in WWI aircraft.

My thanks to Albatros Productions for providing the review copy of Windsock Worldwide Vol.29, No.4 and IPMS/USA for the opportunity to review another edition of this excellent publication.
