Nice things often come in simple packages. The Squadron Tool Decal Positioner is an example of this, measuring in at 10 cm (slightly less than 4 inches). A small contoured rod with a rubbery tip used to position decals is the simple solution to this old modeler’s “fat finger” problem.

I came back into the hobby after a long hiatus. I was used to thick decals that I could slide around with my fingers. I quickly learned that the current aftermarket decals were much thinner, and folded in on themselves or tore very easily. To solve this dilemma, I then started using a pencil, toothpicks, and other items to try and slide the decals into position. Sometimes it worked, other times it did not.

For that reason, I jumped at the chance to review the Squadron Tool Decal Positioner.

Instantly, decal placement became easier with fewer issues. The flat rubber top allows me to apply pressure on the decals when moving them in place. I can also use the flat wooden end to place some very small decals.

Knowing that people will respond with “just use a pencil eraser”, I grabbed a brand new #2 pencil and used it to move decals. Large kit decals moved ok, but the eraser wasn’t smooth, and moving after-market or very small decals was not successful. I think the pencil eraser did not work because it has a rounded edge, whereas the Squadron Tool has a flat/angled top. Likewise, the other end is also flat/angled.

I highly recommend adding this tool to your next Squadron order. My next Squadron order will have a couple of these added and I will use them as Christmas “stocking” stuffers.
