TBD-1 Landing Gear
The Product
Packaged in what has become the standard aftermarket small parts blister pack and sporting a colorful shield very similar to the USAF SAC shield, we find four small white metal parts making for one pair of gear legs. The parts look very nice and should clean up nicely. The castings themselves are identical to the kit parts and should swap out with no foreseeable problems. The white metal in my sample seemed a bit soft and bent easily without intended manipulation. White metal parts and plastic model kits have a long history and can work well together.
The Problem
The landing gear is cast in the unloaded position making them long legged, in other words the oleo is fully extended. A simple online search reveals several photos of correct examples. Now if you want a gear-up model then these would be workable with a little modification. I am currently building the Great Wall Hobby Devastator for an upcoming IPMS review and I had hoped that Scale Aircraft Conversions would have gotten the landing gear in the compressed position where Great Wall failed so miserably, but they did not. By making an exact copy of the kit part in white metal they made an exact copy of the problem.
The Bottom Line
I am sorry but I cannot recommend this product and I will not use it on my current build.
Thank You
Thank you Scale Aircraft Conversion for the review sample and thank you IPMS/USA for allowing me the opportunity to inspect and review this produ
