Scale Modeling Quarterly is an interesting new magazine that nice variety of subjects of interest to many modelers. This is the second edition of the relatively new modeling magazine by Hobbyscale Press. The magazine is described is a journal for and by scale modelers. The magazine is published quarterly and costs $7.99 per issue.

The magazine is 8.5” x 11”, printed on a gloss paper and is 52 pages including covers. The typeface is large, easy to read, and colors are used to accentuate paragraph headings and titles. The photographs are sharp and are all printed in color.

The magazine includes a nice mix of editorial articles, modeler profiles, build articles, and modeling techniques.

Contents of this issue include:

  • Airfix Merlin HC3 model build of an IPMS 2014 Nationals award winner.
  • A profile of modeler and illustrator Mike Powers
  • IJN Submarine Tender Diorama. The largest article in the magazine at 16 pages, describing the build of a three-ship diorama using techniques to create a realistic seascape.
  • An article on painting realistic faces using acrylic paints.
  • Reviews of 3 Mushroom Model Publications books.
  • Keeping It Clean And Ready: AIRBRUSH. Interesting article on how to thoroughly clean airbrushes.
  • Highlighting The Best In Hampton, Virginia. An overview of the 2014 IPMS National Convention.
  • Modeling a Prewar Carrier Deck. Using real wood to create a base for a 1/72 scale aircraft.
  • And one for the kids. An article intended for novice modelers using a simple X-Wing kit to practice weathering technics.
  • Upcoming events and more. A section with upcoming model contests and other events, store listings, classifieds, and an advertiser index.

In summary this is a well-done publication with a broad range of subjects. The articles are well written and the photos clear and helpful.
