Normally, I don’t build outside of my pre-1945 comfort zone, but I’ve always liked the shape and look of the Tucano and Super Tucano aircraft. When HobbyBoss released their 1/48 scale kit of the Super Tucano recently, I couldn’t pass on making the purchase. As with any decent kit, there is always room for a little improvement. To that end, Quickboost has released three new resin details for the HobbyBoss Super Tucano kit.

Part #

Part Name

Cost

QB 48 612

Exhaust

$6.50

QB 48 613

Control lever

$6.50

QB 48 614

Gun Barrels

$6.50

While the kit parts are not terrible, these three parts really needed to be replaced. The resin is superior in detail compared to their styrene counterparts. Quickboost’s castings haven’t disappointed me yet, and these replacement parts are up to their normal quality and detail standards, featuring a clean, bubble-free molding.

Exhaust QB 48 612

Due to molding limitations, the exhausts in the kit are molded in two halves. The plastic is thin, but the shape of the aft-most flange is a bit too straight to my eye. Also, there is an alignment pin inside the exhaust that is visible after the halves are assembled. The replacement exhaust stubs correct these issues and are a big improvement over the styrene parts.

Control Lever QB 48 613

The kit control levers retain the general shape of the control stick handle, but that is about it. They have an odd transition from the shaft to the handle. This is not present in the resin replacements. Quickboost’s version also has three buttons on the handle, where the styrene part does not. Finally, Quickboost includes a spare third control stick that could be utilized in another project.

Gun Barrels QB 48 614

The kit’s part is okay, including a representation of the cooling holes, but there is no barrel opening molded on the parts. Again, Quickboost has come to the rescue. Not only do they give you two spare barrels, but the cooling holes are a bit better defined and (included for no extra charge) the barrel openings are present.

I’d like to thank Aires Hobby Models for providing the review samples as well as IPMS/USA for allowing me to review these great resin bits.
