Dornier Do-335 Wheel Bay Plugs
Fresh from the Review Corps gathering at the 2025 IPMS-USA Nationals comes this wheel bay plug set from O-Mask for the Tamiya 1/48 scale Dornier Do-335. I have been using foam earplugs trimmed to size as needed for several years when masking openings during painting, but these precision-cut plugs can simply be used with no additional work required. I highly recommend this set of plugs to any modeler that airbrushes or sprays their models and is building a Do-335.
According to information provided by O-Mask, these laser-cut foam plugs are designed to cover wheel wells, air brake bays, intakes, exhausts, cowlings, or other areas of your model. Made of soft, colored foam, these plugs are relatively chemical-resistant and therefore, reusable.
Made to fit a specific aircraft model from a specific manufacturer, they simply slip into the open area, completely filling it, thus protecting it from overspray. Some plugs are split into multiple parts for easier application, so the joints need to be covered by tape.
Although these plugs are made to fit a specific aircraft from a specific company, you may be able to use them in the designated aircraft, but from a different manufacturer. These masking plugs are easy to use and are tremendous time-savers.
This review set contains three plugs which are used to mask the wheel bays alone. The recommended Tamiya kits are 61074, 61076, 89598, 61088, and 25206. For this review, I pulled kit 89598 from my stash (Dornier Do335A Pfeil w/Kettenkraftrad), and as I expected, the masks easily slid into place to protect the underlying areas from overspray.
My hits for this set are the precision cuts on the plugs and the ingenuity of making single masks to simply drop into place during the painting process. As I mentioned, I have been using foam, albeit earplugs, to mask openings for many years, so I can attest that overspray will not get past foam. I have no misses for this item.
In conclusion, I highly recommend these plugs for anyone building a 1/48 scale Tamiya Dornier Do-335. For a small investment, you can save some time and not worry about the potential of overspray getting past your masking.
My thanks to the folks from Eduard for providing this O-Mask set to the IPMS/USA for review!
