Phoenix Scale Modelling, April 2022, is the third issue of a new modeling magazine printed in the UK. Phoenix also publishes Scale Aviation Modelling, which focuses on aircraft models, and several series of books on aircraft, including modelers guides. Scale Modeller is also available in a digital format. The magazines are currently available at 250 Barnes & Noble stores for $12.99 with Issue 1 currently on the shelf.

I would describe Scale Modelling as a general interest modeling magazine as it includes six different categories of models.

A new, welcome release from prolific AMMO by Mig Jimenez, is this four-color acrylic paint set labelled for World War II Japanese Infantry. The paint comes in 17ml plastic bottles, complete with a stirring ball, in a clear plastic clamshell box. Also included is a color two-sided label with a very well painted World War II Japanese soldier with color callouts for the paints provided. While the paints can be procured individually, the four major colors are included (and most likely cheaper than buying them individually). The following paints are included:

Publisher’s Notes

“A comprehensive, accurate, and academically-supported reference of all of the major military and paramilitary camouflage patterns that have been in use around the world from the end of World War Two to today.

This book will be a one-stop, generalized reference illustrating as many patterns as have been researched into the present time period. It will surpass all previous efforts. In addition to color tiles illustrating camouflage patterns it will include photographs of the designs actually being worn by military and paramilitary personnel, something few other references have done in suitable combination.”

The book is divided into eight chapters. The pictures are located throughout the chapters with many of them pertaining to the particular battle being discussed by the author. Except for the first chapter in which his birth and early career are touched upon, the rest of the chapters are dedicated to the battles in which he took part. A good explanation of the battle discussed is given on each of the chapters dedicated to the particular battle. In addition, maps of the battle are also provided.

The first chapter is divided describing his early career, and the beginning of the war against Russia. It ends with the description of the battles of Smolensk-Moscow and Stalingrad. In the second chapter the author describes the failure of the Soviet troops to achieve their assigned task to thrust deep into the German lines and cut their retreat routes. The Germans thus counter-attacked that defeated the Russians.

The second chapter then moves to the decision of the British to save as many fighting men as they can through Operation Dynamo. The third chapter talks about the POW’S, as well as the massacres at Le Paradis and Wormhoudt. In this volume, Kevin Wright picks up where we left off in Volume one (CIA U-2 Operations over Europe, the USSR and the Middle East, 1956-1960). You can read that review on this website. After the shootdown and public humiliation of the United States, western European allies became reluctant to continue supporting U-2 operations. In response the CIA turned its attention to the other emerging super power, China. Much like they had enlisted and trained British pilots the CIA now began a campaign to prepare Taiwanese aircrew to operate the U-2. The initial operations focused on determining if the Chinese were staging military forces to invade their Island. Once it was determined that the threat wasn’t immediate, deeper overflights with a strategic purpose of tracking Chinas nuclear development and testing progress were conducted. It was a costly program for the Taiwanese pilots as four U-2 were shot down.

Thanks to Casemate Publishing & IPMS/USA for the review copy!

The rapid Russian army takeover of Southeast Europe in 1944 is a seldom-covered topic, but its importance loomed huge for the Cold War and the fates of those countries to this very day. Kamen Nevenkin presents viewpoints of the events from German, Russian and the countries involved perspectives. This book shows the realities of war on the Southeastern Front, where nations changed allegiances, national boundaries were redrawn, and the Soviet expansion was inexorable. Numerous photographs show the conduct and aftermath of brutal battles, and are not for the faint-hearted. This book is an excellent primer on this little-known, forgotten theatre of WW2.

I have been using enamels for many years (a couple of decades) now. Enamel hobby paints are getting hard to find and there are the health considerations on enamels, so I have been exploring different acrylic options out there. I was surprised to find out that ICM Models from Ukraine has released an extensive set of paints that are acrylic and water thinnable.

The 80-Color boxing includes 77 actual colors and 3 varnishes: matt, satin and gloss. There is no thinner included in the boxing, but that is nitpicking. The box says that you can thin the paint using water.

The 9th e-book from Richard Marmo has to do with turning an e-book into a hard copy to keep on your shelf.

I relate well to this title as I am one of the old school who still prefers paper to pixels. While I am willing to read books on my phone when it comes to model related material, I would much rather have it flat on my desk to review rather than on a computer or phone screen.

Richards smaller than usual e-book actually points to these concerns during his introduction. The Basics covers the different types of formats available and brings up copyright concerns.

The then jumps into the meat of the topic with what is needed to print, namely a computer, printer, Adobe Reader and even discusses the different types of paper and using binders to store the printed version.
