The book covers the first winter in Russia through the Canadian landing at Dieppe and is divided into 11 chapters covering the main events during the third year of the war. The sources of the photos are from England, Germany, Japan, USA, Russia and personal archives. As far as I know this is the first time that a compilation of all these photos has been made.

The photos are sharp and of very good quality and show good detail. The battles covered by the book include: Hitler's First Russian Winter, Rommel and the Fall of Tobruk, Tojo Attacks Pearl harbor, Japanese onslaught in Southeast Asia, Tokyo Attacked - The Doolittle Revenge Raid, Battle of Coral Sea and Battle of Midway, British Target St. Nazaire Dry Dock, Operation Biting-The Bruneval Raid, RAF starts Area Bombing: Target Civilians, Hitler Battles for the Caucasus Oil Fields and The Canadian Landing at Dieppe.

Bases by Bill produces display bases, display cases, and associated products. This particular item is part of their Painted Display Bases line. It is made of hardwood cut in a 10” diameter round shape with a thickness of ~¾”. The base is painted on the top and sides, with this particular one displaying the Messerschmitt logo in black and white. Quality is very good. The paint finish has a light satin coat. It looks durable. The bottom is sanded smooth and has a horizontal keyhole slot cut toward the upper side so that it can be hung on a wall.

This set includes 5 medium (280) grit sanding sticks. To help those of us who are visually oriented, the sanding sticks are a nice orange color, which will help distinguish them from Squadron’s other sanding sticks quickly as each grit is a different. The sanding sticks have a nice thick piece of styrene in the center of each stick to give them some rigidity, which I found useful when sanding larger flat seams such as the wing seam on my original issue Airfix Vulcan.

The box advises you that the sanding sticks can be cut and shaped to fit specific needs or shapes, however they are not easy to cut due to the styrene piece in the center of the stick. I ended up using large house scissors and a sharp Xacto in order to cut off a part of the sanding stick.

The German Operation Wacht am Rhein (Watch on the Rhine), also called the Ardennenoffensive (Ardennes Offensive) occurred from 16 December 1944 to 25 January 1945, launched in the same area as the German 1940 attack on France, through the densely forested area between Belgium and Luxembourg. At this late stage in the war, the German military realized the only hope of stemming the Russian assault, which paused only when they outran their supply lines, was to force the Allies to surrender or accept a separate peace. Germany realized that a sudden, swift attack into this lightly held area was the only way they had any chance for success. The goal was the capture of the Belgian port of Antwerp, which would increase Allied supply lines and have the secondary effect of splitting four allied armies.

Operation Studie Nord, the German plan for the invasion of Scandinavia was further developed into two separate plans that were to run concurrently – Weserubung (River Exercise) and Weserubung Sud (River Exercise South) for Norway and Denmark, respectively. The plans were drawn up after Germany’s invasion of Poland and during the “Phoney War” (Queen’s English as the book’s author is English). This often-overlooked campaign violated both Denmark and Norway’s neutrality before the German military campaign against France and the Low Countries and took place shortly after the Russian-Finish Winter War of 1939-1940. Besides Denmark and Sweden being neutral, both countries’ monarchs were brothers. The similarities between both countries continued with relatively low numerical military strength and modern weapons; the difference was how the countries chose to respond.

Hungary found itself on the losing side of World War I and the Treaty of Trianon was similar to the Treaty of Versailles imposed on Germany. As a result, Hungary was partitioned (see map on page 5) and reduced from 282,000 square kilometers to 93,000 square kilometers and its population from 18 million to 9.5 million people, absorbed by foreign countries hostile to Hungary; Hungary’s industrial base was reduced by almost 80%, and its military was limited in size and scope. Hungary’s involvement in World War II was seen through the lens of regaining their lost territories from Slovakia, Romania, Austria, and Yugoslavia. When political methods didn’t work, Hungary’s limited military did what it could, but soon found itself allied with Germany to achieve its aims.

About the Creators

Bases by Bill, LLC is one of those rare companies that began from love of the model building hobby, a good idea and true family involvement. They specialize in hand-finished hardwood display bases and cases and other presentation items for scale models.

I had the great pleasure of meeting them at the 2022 IPMS National Convention in Omaha, Nebraska. The company is operated by Bill & his son Weston and receives marketing and website support from his nephew Christian. It truly is a family company.

The growing number of 3D printed kits is a boon to the hobby. We are now getting 3D printed kits of subjects that are not economically viable in styrene and for subjects long ignored by the big manufactures. But, new technologies bring new problems. Removing the 3D printed parts from the support structures and rafts can be a bit of work and as I have discovered the resin will quickly dull your expensive sprue cutter! CMK from the Czech Republic comes to the rescue with a new razor saw handle with a triangular blade that is perfect for dealing with these supports.

For the visually inspired, this is the perfect format. This volume is 40 pages of color renderings of six different Mig fighter versions, 15,17,19,21,23 and 29. Each type has one four-view layout to assist with camo patterns where applicable. The renderings are very well done with a slightly worn appearance to them. As the series title indicates, a small decal sheet is included with national markings for Polish, East German or Czechoslovakian Mig 15 or 17s in 1/72 or 1/48 scales. These have a very glossy appearance I’ve encountered with decals from Eastern European manufacturers before, so I tested them on a scrap part. You'll have to be very careful where you use these. Even with aggressive decal solvents, they didn’t want to settle into panel lines. They worked on a smooth surface and the film did not silver. For the money, I would have rather a decal sheet with a couple complete aircraft insignias including bort numbers.
