The Challenger I was a British main battle tank (MBT) used by the British Army from 1983 to 2001 and was succeeded by the Challenger II. It saw action during the Gulf War and in the former Yugoslavia.

Author Richard King is a former British Army tanker and is well versed in the subject. He outlines the rather sketchy and draw-out development process for the tank, its tortured introduction into service and its eventual excellent service and combat record. The vicissitudes of British armed forces procurement are painstakingly detailed, and the average soldier’s distain for bureaucracy, officialdom and rank are evident in his humourous tales. Indeed, the British sense of humour in adversity is oft-displayed and is a memorable part of the story. Keep an eye open for characters such as Lay-by Lil, Rupert, and Wolfgang the Bratty Man.

Background of Marston Matting

I realize that I recently completed a companion review of this similar M8A1 landing matting and do not wish to rehash the same ground. However, if you’re interested, I urge you to read that narrative as well, as the background and history of the Marston mat system is one that should be of historical and modeling interest for many of us.

I should also point out that this modern style of Marston matting is not the type with the circular holes, but rather the narrow-slit types of surface design. The original WW II type (with holes) can be found in the ICM line at kit # 49017 (though I have been unable to locate recently).

BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front) – this is a great kit at a great value! This is not a Tamiya tank model of our past – this is a new approach for a company often referred to as “shake and bake” for its ease of construction. Tamiya models are known for their effortless assembly but are soft on details. This kit is a fantastic introduction to what is hopefully a whole new line of tank models. The detail is superb, the assembly is straightforward, and I asked myself a few times if I was building another model company’s tank. The model comes with PE parts, clear parts, masks, and two of their superb new figures for the Commander and Loader (complete with decals for their ranks, name badges, and beret insignia). This kit also came with the Leopard 2A7V Metal Barrel (Item No. 12694, available separately for $21.

Intro

This last part has only 2 key elements really, the flight deck and the island. However, there are a lot of individual steps that make this as long as the other 2 parts of the ship already completed (hull and hangar bay). The fine details really come together around the flight deck. Take note of the order in which you want to handle the assembly. For instance, doing some of the PE on the flight deck would be best done before attaching the island so you can flip the carrier over for ease of assembly. With that, let’s head for our home port...

In The Box

The kit box is a side open box with all the contents sitting in a sturdier tray cardboard box. The sprues are enclosed in a single plastic bag. In one corner of the box, the 3D parts are wrapped and attached to eliminate any transit movement.

The injected plastic hardness is on the medium side. The recessed and raised molded details are outstanding. It is very evident Arma Hobby put a lot of research into the making of their kits and it shows on the surface detail. The clear parts are thin and with no distortion and it has options for an open or closed canopy.

The 3D parts are tightly nested on a single print and includes the aft belly fuselage, tail-hook, pilot seat (with harnesses), exhaust tubes, and cannons.
