This landscaped, hardback book is the third in a new series of books by renowned and prolific photograph collector and author Tom Cockle, published through PeKo Publishing of Hungary. This volume continues its proven formula of amazing photographs, many previously unpublished, of armored and soft skin vehicles in depots, in the field and post combat. Each page reveals more surprises than the previous. The first volume in this series was reviewed here: WW2 Vehicles Through the Lens Vol.1.

Volume 3 consists of the following six parts:

  • Part One – Lastkraftwagen 3t mit Gleiskette (Maultier) (Sd.Kfz.3)
  • Part Two – Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf.E (Sd.Kfz.141)
  • Part Three – Pz.Sfl.2 für 7.2cm Pak 36 (Sd.Kfz.132) (Marder III)
  • Part Four – Panzerjäger Tiger (P) mit 8.8cm Pak 43/2 (L/71) (Sd.Kfz.184)
  • Part Five – T-34/76
  • Part Six – Steyr 1500A

Each chapter is roughly 20 pages each and have a plethora of inspiration for modelers with German armored forces, Russian T-34/76 (destroyed and German captures), the Steyr 1500A soft skin vehicle, scenery, and battle damage. The photographs place the reader in the pages before or after battle with maintenance, repairs, and everyday life. The book is a great reference for weathering and placing models in vignettes and dioramas. The post battle photos are amazing, and modelers can really let their imagination loose with extra detailing.

I cannot recommend this book enough for modelers of World War II German armor and early-to-mid Red Army T-34s. Tom Cockle’s photographs and concise captions are a benefit to readers. The photographs are shot from a German perspective, and there are a lot of candid photos in the 124 pages. Tom Cockle gives thanks to Holger Erdmann and his website, “Kfz der Wehrmacht" for the resources throughout this book. This is a great book for combat vehicles in their environments.

Profuse thanks to Casemate and IPMS/USA for providing the review sample.
