USN Inshore Patrol VSN-201, Quonset Pt, RI & VS-504 Cape May, NJ
Monogram’s 1/48th scale Kingfisher has been around a while and it is a fun kit to build. Yellow Wings continues in its traditions of making markings for planes between 1930 and 1942 with this release for the venerable Kingfisher. This release covers two planes on “USN Inshore Patrol”. These were planes used for patrolling for U-boats right of the coast of the US. There are two planes represented:
- VS-201, Quonset Point, RI
- VS-504, Cape May, NJ
Both planes are primarily aluminum painted with colorful marking bands and cowlings with early US insignia. Inside the package, there is a well printed (by Microscale) decal sheet with markings for two complete planes; complete profile and marking instructions for two planes with detailed notes and color call outs; a sheet of painting instructions and tips for planes of that period and lastly, instructions for the decal application. I do see one error. The kit lists the Kitty Hawk OS2U kit as the suggested kit but that is a 1/32nd scale kit. There was a lot of hope in the modeling community they would scale it down but it wasn’t meant to be so Monogram is the preferred kit.
As noted, the decals are in perfect register and great color; they will apply well as Microscale does. Highly recommended.
My thanks to Yellow Wings and IPMS USA for the opportunity to review this excellent set of decals.
