Each issue of Scale Aircraft Modeling follows a basic design and format. There are usually two Feature Articles, an Aviation in Profile piece, industry news and a series of Compact Build Reviews. The great news of or this issue is that there are three feature articles.

The feature articles for this issue covers a build of 1/72 Revell H.P. Heyford, a 1/72 Airfix FW190A-8 in a winter diorama setting and a 1/48 Trumpeter A-3D Skywarrior as a bonus. The Heyford build is by Neil Pinchbeck and covers the construction of this vintage kit first released by Matchbox in the 1980's. I love this article as it shows just what can be done with a vintage kit including sections on correcting flaws, scratch building cockpits and rigging. The results are awesome.

The second Feature article is from Marco Preto and features the new Airfix FW190A-8. The build is straight OOB but he adds a superb diorama base with a snow covered. Mr. Preto takes us step by step on making the base, adding vegetation and then weathering. by adding Precision Ice and Snow.

The 3rd Feature is new and very welcome an covers the build of Trumpeters 1/48 A-3D Skywarrior with Steel beach add-ons including wheel, seats and rear turret. The build is by Mike Williams and shows how the wing folds work and the enhancement the Steel Beach parts make for the kit.

The Aviation in Profile article covers the Handley Page HP.50 Heyford. I love the way the SAM profile covers one of the kits built and does not stick to the common plane. There are excellent plan drawings and schemes shown including one possible trainer with an all yellow bottom.

As is the case in each issue of SAM, there are a number of Compact Build Reviews.

  • Girolamo Lorusso builds Italeri's 1/72 FIAT Cr.32 with a great paint job
  • Jay Laverty continues work on the 1/12 Spitfire build
  • Eduard's 1/48 Spitfire Mk IX is built by Chris Fleet
  • Roden's surprise 1/144 C-47 is built by Lukasz Kedzierski
  • Trumpeters 1/72 FW200 is built by Steve Bowe
  • Hasegawa's rerelease of the 1/48 Spitfire Mk VIII is built in Aussie markings by Mike Williams
  • Karl Robinson builds TWO Academy 1/72 FW190D-9's
  • Gary Bottoms builds Williams Brothers 1/32 Caudron C.450
  • Massimo Santarossa builds Revell's new 1/144 Airbus A350
  • And for a finale, Seb Videc and Angel Gonzalez build two unusual Meteor kits using Special Hobbies 1/72 kits. Both are experimental- one with propellers and the other with a long nose.

In addition, there are numerous notes, new kit announcements and other modeling related items. As always, SAM is highly recommended for its content and excellent reference information.

Thanks to Scale Aircraft Modelling and IPMS/USA for the opportunity to review this issue.
