RAF Instrument Dial Decals and WW2 Allied Cockpit Placard Decals
The two decal sets are in clear register, well printed and of great use to the aircraft modeler. Those that scratch build their own instrument panels will find these immensely useful. As one who builds a lot of resin kits I can see these being of great benefit there as well. They also will enhance a kit instrument panel going over the raised detail. Lastly, the gauge decals also include a small rectangle of clear, thin plastic so those with a punch and die set can make their own glass covers for the instruments.
For the instrument set (AS48RAF) we are given 32 different instruments. The placard (AS48PLA) set gives us various styles in five different categories; General warnings, Notices, Dataplates, Specific warnings and Labels. The only complaint with the instrument dial set is that there is no legend to show which instrument is which. A minor problem since without a magnifying glass one is hard to tell from another when placed on a panel. Still given the quality of these decals one would like to place the correct dial in the proper place, especially as I am told that a legend is included in the 1/32 and 1/24 sets. It is under such magnification that these products really show their quality both the gauges and placards are legible under good magnification. I chose to add these to a Hasegawa Spitfire Mk IXc panel and as you can see they really bring it to life!
The decals on both sheets perform well. They lie flat on a flat surface and snuggle down over raised detail. The use of Airscale's products will greatly improve the look of your cockpit. I hope that they will also do these in 1/72 as even in 1/48 there some instrument locations on some panels for which the 1/48 ones are too large. My resin kit building has taught me that even though I build exclusively 1/48, I always will need one or two 1/32 or 1/72 instrument decals to complete a panel.
These are excellent products that any modeler should have on hand. They are useful to everyone from the novice to the scratch builder alike. I also want to praise Airscale for finally giving us placard decals as these have been long over looked. I give these products my strongest recommendation and will be ordering their other 1/48 sets as well. My thanks to Airscale Model Aircraft Enhancements and IPMS/USA for the opportunity to review these wonderful products.
