Medal of Honor, Volume 6: AAF Aviators of WW2, Part 2
From Wikipedia: The Medal of Honor (MOH) is the United States Armed Forces' highest military decoration and is awarded to recognize American soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, guardians, and coast guardsmen who have distinguished themselves by acts of valor. The medal is normally awarded by the President of the United States (the commander in chief of the armed forces) and is presented "in the name of the United States Congress." It is often, but incorrectly, referred to as the Congressional Medal of Honor.
This is volume six in the series and part two dealing with WWII USAAC aviators awarded the MOH. The book is 185 pages long with 206 photos of which 28 are in color, 43 aircraft color profile plus 3 color top views, and 4 formation diagrams. Those awarded the MOH covered in this volume are Donald Gott & William Metzger, James Howard, Lloyd Hughes, Leon Johnson, John Kane, Neal Kearby, David Kingsley, and Raymond Knight. All but Howard, Johnson and Kane were killed in action on the missions for which they were awarded the MOH .
For each recipient there is a short biography, mission synopsis, full award citation and other information. Gott and Metzger are covered together as they earned the MOH in the same aircraft on the same mission.
This book is a remarkably interesting read. The stories are filled with inspiration and heroism. I plan to get others in this series as these stories need to be told and remembered. All these men gave their best for their country, fellow servicemen and every one of us, most gave the full measure of their lives! This is a book that you will be glad to own. It is filled with photos and profiles. I can recommend this to modelers, aviation, and WWII historians/enthusiasts alike. Buy it! You will not be disappointed! My thanks to IPMS/USA for the review opportunity and to Aeronaut books for the book itself.
