If you enjoyed the movie “Ford v Ferrari” that was released back in 2019, Starfighter Decals now provides you with the ability to replicate the Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby driven Ford GT Mk. II that took second place at the 1966 24-hour race at Le Mans (or you can watch the movie and decide who really won). This decal sheet was produced to aid the modeler in more accurately reproducing the Ken Miles vehicle and are recommended for any modeler.

I noticed this decal release at the Starfighter booth at the IPMS USA Nationals this year and was fortunate enough to pick them up at the Review Corps get together. I previously purchased the 2021 Meng release of this car (kit CS 004) thinking it was good out of the box with the Meng decals. According to the “Builders Notes” included with these decals is the following, “The car was painted Ford Arcadian Blue (PPG 12854). Nose Flashes were Florescent Red and only used on Race Day. Restored car uses Ford Poppy Red (PPG 60449).” Looking closely at race day video and photos of the 1 car, you can see that the red is not dark in color, and the florescent red being the better match. Most images and videos show the restored car with the darker red.

The other difference that I noticed was that the Starfighter Decals have a black outline around the “1”, which matches race day photos of the real car. The Meng decals have a blue outline matching the edges on the white stripes, which again aligns with the restored car. In the end, it comes down to the builder and their desire to represent either the car driven in the 1966 Le Mans race, or the restored vehicle.

As far as my hits are concerned, I appreciate the effort that went into researching the car in order to create these decals. I am confident that people would look at the restored vehicle and consider the kit-provided decals to be adequate. I do not have other offerings of this car in my stash, so I cannot comment on decals included by other manufacturers. I have no misses to mention with this decal set.

In closing, I would highly recommend this decal sheet to fans of “Ford v Ferrari”, or of the late Ken Miles who want to represent the car that won the 1966 Le Mans race (I mean came in second). These decals should provide little challenge for the average modeler.

I would like to thank Starfighter Decals for being gracious enough to provide this decal sheet to the IPMS-USA for review! Thanks to Phil Peterson for obtaining this set for review at the Nationals, and thanks to the folks behind the scenes in the Review Corps who keep the review machine running so well. As always, my final and most sincere gratitude to all who take the time to read this.
