HAD Decals F-14A VF-41 Black Aces

HAD Models is a group out of the Budapest Hungary and specializes in decals and masking sets for aircraft kits in the all-major scales from 1/144 to 1/35. They range from WWII to modern era planes. This set is in 1/48th scale and covers F-14A’s from the VF-41 Black Aces. Markings are included for seven unique planes:

  • Fast Eagle 106, BuNo 160398 from the Movie Final Countdown
  • Fast Eagle 114, BuNo 160395 from the Movie Final Countdown
  • Fast Eagle 101 BuNo 162689, Operation Desert Storm, 1991
  • Fast Eagle 107 BuNo 160399, Operation Eagle Claw, 1980
  • Fast Eagle 107 BuNo 160390, Gulf of Sidra Sukhoi Killer, August 1980
  • Fast Eagle 107 BuNo 160390, Gulf of Sidra Sukhoi Killer, February 1982
  • Fast Eagle 107 BuNo 160390, Gulf of Sidra Sukhoi Killer, August 1982

Inside the packet, there are two double sided instruction sheets and cover all in full color with color call outs, left and right profiles of each plane, a top/bottom profile and locations for all the markings and stencils. I will say that the colors are simple- FS16440 Light Gull Gray for the planes everywhere. The detail painting colors for things like the exhausts, wing bladders, etc. will need to be found on the kit but that is very easy to do. I surveyed the sheet and it looks like enough markings to do two planes. You may be short some stencils but those are easily found.

I love the choice of markings- some movie markings, some Desert Storm, Operations Eagle Claw (the failed attempt to rescue the Iranian hostages) plus three different time frame versions of the Gulf of Sidra F-14 (Fast Eagle 107 which shot down an Su-22). For those that love nose art, the Desert Storm plane has nice nose art on it.

While the set does not mention a particular kit, there are a lot of choices led by Tamiya’s beautiful F-14A.

What a great set. I used one duplicate decal and they came off the backing well and settled on an old piece well. Highly recommended to anyone interested in the Tomcat or great historical markings.

My Thanks to HAD Models and IPMS/USA for the chance to review this set of great decals.
