Audi R8 Build & Play
Background
The production Audi R8 was named after the manufacturer’s 5-time LeMans winner and was first marketed in 2006. Featuring a mid-mounted 4.2 liter V8 engine, generating 420 brake horsepower enabling a top speed of over 180 miles per hour, the R8 is truly a super sports car.
The Kit
Consisting of 13 pieces in pre-painted metallic orange and flat black; clear, chrome, and red clear styrene, steel axles, and vinyl tires, this kit is well-suited for first-time and beginning modelers. Exterior, interior, and underside detail is crisply molded and provides a convincing replica of the R8.
The Build
Behind the wheel on this build was my 9-year old son, Camden, who has now been building for a few years and has contributed to a number of IPMS reviews. Usually for his review builds, Camden gets a significant amount of adult supervision and coaching. This one was done completely solo – with dad nowhere nearby to coach or advise. Ten minutes after disappearing into the workshop, Camden emerged with the finished product built to spec. From a “play” perspective, the steel axles and vinyl tires really allow the finished product to scoot across floors and other hard surfaces. Upon a bit of paternal interrogation, the lad relayed that the parts all went together without any fuss, and that the instructions were very clear and easy to follow.
Conclusion
An excellent kit for first-timers and beginning young modelers, Revell’s Audi R8 Build N Play is highly recommended by Camden and this reviewer.
Thanks to Revell for the sample kit and to IPMS/USA for the opportunity to review it.
