Hobby Boss has issued many 1/350 submarines from modern day to WWII. This offering continues the WWII kits with a 1941 version of a Gato class submarine successor, the Balao class, and the submarine that carried much of the burden of the submarine war in the Pacific.

This offering is the lead class in this series as the USS Gato, SS-212 from 1941. The kit includes three sprues, a stand, a photoetch name plate and a small decal sheet. Molding is crisp and clean with no flash. The kit is 26 parts including the photoetch and the stand.

The assembly instructions are two steps with the first adding the hull and bottom parts and the second were finishing the conning tower and detail. Fit is very good with only a little putty on the bottom.

Kagero Publishing, from Poland, in TopDrawings No. 123, exhibits the largest, fastest and last British battleship, HMS Vanguard, in all its glory as the world’s largest yacht for royalty. Also, the last battleship ever launched. The TopDrawings series is designed for modelers to have a reference for detailed appearances of individual ships and aircraft. TopDrawings consist of color covers with black & white (B&W) line drawings of the ship, particular features, and equipment, especially armament (including aircraft). But the main attraction is the separate, large foldout of B&W scale drawings – 1/400 in this book, to match existing model kits.

Kagero Publishing, from Poland, in TopDrawings No. 125, illustrates the last commissioned battleship of the French Marine Nationale – Jean Bart, in his final fit in 1956. The TopDrawings series is designed for modelers to have a reference for detailed appearances of individual ships and aircraft. TopDrawings consist of color covers with black & white (B&W) line drawings of the ship, particular features, and equipment, especially armament. But the main attraction is the separate, large foldout of B&W scale drawings – 1/400 in this book, to match existing model kits – and now there are full color profiles in 1/400 scale. This TopDrawings is a go-to reference for building or scratchbuilding the Jean Bart as a waterline or full hull model.

The author, Witold Koszela, has published more than 26 books on warships, with at least 14 in the Kagero TopDrawing series. Witold also supplied the line and color drawings.

Thanks to DragonUSA for supplying the resin/PE set for review and IPMSUSA staff for handling the request and publishing this review. Special thanks to Dave Morrissette who forwarded this kit to me after I and everyone else refused to review it in 2014. I said it would take me a while to get to it, but better late than never! Apologies to DragonUSA for the delay. YD98 is still available!

Bottom Line

Volume 2 of the WW2 German Kriegsmarine battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau focuses on the career and appearance of DKM Gneisenau. Volume I gives more info on Gneisenau than anything previous – an extensive narrative history along with many B&W photos, a section of high-quality, large-scale photographs, stunning 3D graphic “visualizations” of her various fits, two large foldout sheets of 1/200 line drawings (four sides), a foldout sheet in 1/72 scale for the floatplanes and 3D glasses for the 3D photos. A modeler and historian could not ask for better references.

The Ship

So much has been written about the battleship Yamato that anyone familiar with the Pacific War will know of the Japanese super battleship. Realizing that they could not compete one-on-one with the U.S.Navy, from the mid-1930s the Japanese shipbuilding philosophy was to build each of their new warships to be individually superior to any competing USN warship design. Commissioned into the IJN in late 1941 and early 1942 respectively, the Yamato and her sister-ship, Musashi represented the epitome of this philosophy. Weighing in at nearly 70,000 tons fully loaded, they were the largest battleships ever built and were not superseded in warship size until the advent of the U.S. Navy’s super carriers in the 1950s. As powerful as they were, Yamato and her sister spent much of their careers at anchor and did not fire their 18.1”guns in anger until the Philippines campaign of October, 1944, where Musashi was sunk by air attack.
